The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council and the GPRTU on May 15th published a letter notifying all transport operators to ensure a 10% reduction of lorry fares effective Wednesday, May 17th, 2023.
Some transport operators after the release of the notice kicked against the decision with reasons being that all other devices needed to enhance the mobility of their vehicles still stands at higher prices hence the fuel reduction alone cannot trigger the sudden reduction of fares.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Mr. Abas Imoro Ibrahim, Head of communications for Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) on High Radio Breakfast Show today May 24, 2023, he stated that the decision taken to reduce transport fares by 10% has been rescinded by GPRTU pending fruitful and further considerations since fuel price alone cannot be the determining factor for lorry fare adjustment therefore the old fares still stands.
He admitted that GPRTU in collaboration with the GRTCC signed the letter and agreed to the 10% reduction but they (GPRTU) upon several contemplation and introspection realized the need to hold on to the old fares and ensure the prices of goods and services and other spare parts are reduced before the newly proposed 10% reduction is applied else its application will affect their works.
He added that other members of the transport Union need to come on board to get to a conclusion on how to go about lorry fare adjustments indicating that all documentation and devices situated to cars are now of high prices with about 300% increment and so it will directly go against the drivers if they accept to reduce their fares by 10 percent without any reduction in the market chain.
