Malawi’s economic crisis has just worsened following the announcement by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) that it has adjusted the prices of fuel with the average of 34 percent effective today, June 23, 2022.
MERA chief Executive Officer Henry Kachaje made the announcement on Wednesday Evening during a media briefing.
According to Kachaje the price hike follows the 25 percent devaluation of the Malawian currency, the Kwacha,
Adding to that Kachaje said exchange rate and landing costs have also necessitated the increase.
Petrol will now be sold at MK1,999 per litre from MK1,380, Diesel will now be sold at MK1,920 from MK1,470 while paraffin is now at MK1,236 from MK956 per litre.
